First Thing After Break

A burglary can be a frightening experience on so many levels. Please remember, the first things to do after a break-in, is to call the Police and put the incident on record for not only insurance purposes, but also to provide the authorities with essential information to potentially catch the thief.

So why is it important to call the Police?

Despite the low arrest percentage, the fact that you let the Police know about the intrusion will trigger multiple factors to help with the investigations.

  • If you have a particular piece of jewellery or art that can be traceable, Police will have it on file, and sometimes after months or years they may have news for you; you may also go to nearby pawn shops and look for your stolen items, you may find it there, alert the Police and they will take over from there.
  • The Police database will be updated, and patrolling will increase if multiple break-ins have been reported in the area
  • If the Police in your area has a crime map (type your address and you will see the latest police data), your issue will show up on the map and everybody can be aware of what is going one in their neighborhood.
  • The Night-Watch, Neighbourhood-Watch, or other organization in your area will be informed and will take action
  • Generally the Police, unfortunately, will not be able to take good fingerprints, a small percentage of fingerprints can be used to get a positive read. It is definitely not like you see on TV. The bad guys may wear gloves, or the fingerprints may be on the furniture, so not traceable. In some circumstances, though, if the fingerprint was on a clean, dry, smooth surface they may have an opportunity to track the burglars.
  • The Police can find homes in your neighborhood that have video-surveillance, and with owner’s permission obtain the recording. Depending on the types of the video cameras, the Police may be able to track the car type, plate number, and maybe also a face.
  • Having Police front of your home will make people in your neighborhood more aware and vigilant
  • The Police can give you good tips regarding securing your home, if not, definitely you can browse my site and you can find plenty of them
