So this is my story…
I got two break-ins, in two different countries, in supposedly safe areas. First one was thru the window and second one was front door break in. With the first one someone climbed through our window on the second floor at night and stole my wallet and my wife’s purse. The idea of someone being in your house while you’re sleeping still gives me the chills.
The second one happened a year ago while we were at work, in bright daylight. Before saying anything else, I’d like to mention that I got quite lucky and there are other unfortunate people who weren’t as lucky as I.
I’m pretty sure there were two guys and here is why:
I have a webcam on the ground floor, facing the main entrance door. We had just installed it to watch our cat when we’re not home.
What you have to know is that generally the bad guys/burglars are working in a team of two: one is breaking the door, and is staying on the ground floor close to the entrance and the other one is going around the house to look for stuff.
In my case, one of the guys went to the second floor directly to the jewelry drawers, but left in a hurry, as just one drawer was open, and stuff was spread also on the floor. Minimal jewelry was stolen, plus my wife’s iPad and laptop were just there on the living room couch and they didn’t touch them.
This is my theory: the guy on the first floor noticed the webcam, yelled to the second guy, and they fled.
Damage done: some jewelry stolen, and the broken door frame.
Lesson learned: the video security camera was not set to record, so it made me think about how I can use the full potential of that camera. I never thought somebody will break in my house in my nice family oriented neighbourhood, but it can happen to anyone. Depending on what type of security camera you have, you may be able to easily set it up to record, and I can show it to you in this step by step guide.
Bottom line is:
Be proactive, there are a so many little things you can do to make your home and protect your valuables, and the best thing? Some of them are free, like making sure you mow your lawn, pick up your mail, etc. anything that will tell burglars: somebody’s home!
